Appreciated this perspective. As I think about repatriating I've also thought a lot about how we tend to over-glamorize the "escaping America" thing (especially if you're Black) and the amount of work + luck + privilege it takes to actually make that shift. Hearing people's concerns about their own countries and governments has really made me pull back on this idea that everywhere else is better than the US. (There's a few exceptions, Portugal and Spain were pretty dope, but that's where the luck comes in...)
I'm with you on this, brother. I'm in The Bronx with 2 kids, a man, and a dog. I'm trying to get out of NYC because of all the murder. But where is there NOT senseless murder and crimes against children?!?!🤷🏽♀️
Feel this a hundred percent. My partner and I are thinking through this now. She wants our kids to grow up "Street Smart" and feels like since she had an ok time growing up in Harlem in the 90's, its fine to raise a kid here too. I want no parts of that, but take them to a suburb, and now you have to worry about one of these kids shooting a school up. It's a mess.
This blog really touched my heart and touched on things I've been ruminating over. Thank you for penning this piece. You aren't alone in your contemplations, and it's sad that we are here.
