This and homophobia/ questioning one’s sexuality in relation to hegemonic masculinity are both low hanging fruit. An absolute bore 🥱

Brava love this so much and appreciated the use of examples across time and medium.

Drake is corny. He has a team of writers concocting his lyrics for him. So, there’s no surprise he responded with such quickness. As far as racial identities, he’s only “black” for profit, for hip-hop cred… he’s a borderline culture vulture. I’m also not impressed by these men using women to hurl insults at one another — really just insulting women who have nothing to do with their rap squabbles.

Drake’s misogyny is inextricably linked to the toxic masculinity he performs to overcompensate for his mediocrity and identity issues. He has a formula, it’s helped him acquire massive success but he knows that he’s not respected in the same way someone like Kendrick is. Idk, he seems similar to Nicki Minaj in that way where it’s obvious he’s deeply insecure about his talent and so talking shit in the most low blow way is what makes feel like he has some power. It’s really embarrassing to watch a man of his age carry on like this.

Thank you for this. I wasn’t familiar with the term, but have been paying attention to it happening. Since you published this, fridging has become the core of the Chris Brown / Quavo beef too!

Thanks for speaking to this. That reference to The Bear made total sense. It’s very much giving, why am I in it???

Let these women mind their business. Can y’all just focus on putting together some clever bars without having to use misogyny as a crutch?

It's the same here in the UK with grime. Wiley and Stormzy had some outstanding opening salvos at each other... before descending into vicious attacks on each other's mums (moms) instead. It was a real disappointment.

Really great examination, thank you - and like many others I'm grateful for the explanation of fridging too!

I'm not very familiar with comic lore, so fridging, its context, & examples were really helpful.

On that note, I'm not at all surprised that Drake is doing the fridging in this series of battles. Though I'd have thought that after mentioning Pusha T's wife he would've made a difference choice. 🤔

@Rachel Leeke

but maybe funny to watch..

i like to call rightwing nutjobs faggish nazi whores..one sense of all these cursewords is that they are pacifistical..

it is the power of the powerless naming the unhonorfull unhonorfull names..

noone dies from it..

exept maybe if someone says “just call my mom onetime more a ugly whore and i fucking kill you!” ..

i would say then “okay! fuck off! you know what your mother is, i don't have to repeat it..”
